job description

Join Nanyang Technological University (NTU), a globally renowned institution at the forefront of cutting-edge research in autonomous systems and artificial intelligence. We are seeking a Research Fellow to contribute to our groundbreaking project on Multi-Agent Path Planning for Autonomous Drone Operations in Maritime Environments.

In this role, you will develop advanced AI-driven navigation algorithms to enable seamless, collision-free drone operations in complex, dynamic maritime settings. Your work will directly impact the future of autonomous aerial systems, enhancing efficiency, safety, and scalability in real-world applications.

As part of our world-class research team, you will collaborate with leading experts in robotics, machine learning, and control systems. This is a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of autonomous drone technology while working in a vibrant, innovative academic environment.

NTU offers a competitive compensation package, state-of-the-art facilities, and the chance to publish high-impact research in top-tier conferences and journals.

Responsibility

  • Design, develop, and optimize multi-agent path planning algorithms for autonomous drones in maritime environments.
  • Implement and test AI-based navigation systems using machine learning, reinforcement learning, or optimization techniques.
  • Conduct simulations and real-world experiments to validate algorithm performance in dynamic, obstacle-rich scenarios.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate path planning solutions with drone hardware and sensor systems.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and conferences (e.g., ICRA, IROS, RSS).
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in autonomous systems, swarm robotics, and AI to inform project direction.
  • Mentor junior researchers and students, fostering a culture of innovation and knowledge sharing.
  • Prepare technical reports, grant proposals, and presentations for stakeholders and funding bodies.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on autonomous systems, path planning, or AI.
  • Proven experience in multi-agent systems, motion planning, or swarm robotics (publications in relevant areas are a plus).
  • Strong programming skills in Python, C++, or MATLAB, with experience in ROS (Robot Operating System) or similar frameworks.
  • Familiarity with machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and optimization tools (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX).
  • Experience with drone hardware, sensor fusion, or SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) is highly desirable.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Prior experience in maritime or aerial robotics is an advantage.
