The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is seeking a National Consultant - Emission Research to join our dynamic team in Bali, Indonesia. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural systems, with a focus on sustainable rice production.
As a key member of our environmental research team, you will play a pivotal role in laboratory operations, capacity building, and data analysis to support IRRI’s mission of reducing the environmental footprint of rice farming. Your work will directly impact global efforts to combat climate change while ensuring food security.
Based in one of Bali’s vibrant hubs—Canggu, Ubud, Denpasar, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, or Kuta—you’ll collaborate with international experts, leverage state-of-the-art facilities, and contribute to high-impact publications. This is a full-time, project-based position with potential for extension based on performance and funding availability.
Responsibility
- Conduct laboratory and field experiments to measure greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O) from rice paddies and related agricultural systems.
- Operate and maintain advanced gas chromatography (GC) and spectroscopy equipment for emission analysis.
- Develop and implement standardized protocols for sample collection, storage, and analysis in compliance with international research standards.
- Provide technical training and capacity building to local staff, researchers, and partners on emission monitoring techniques.
- Analyze and interpret data using statistical software (R, Python, or SPSS) and contribute to research reports and peer-reviewed publications.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate emission findings into sustainable farming recommendations for policymakers and farmers.
- Ensure quality control and assurance of all laboratory processes and data integrity.
- Stay updated on emerging trends in climate-smart agriculture and propose innovative research methodologies.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Environmental Science, Agricultural Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in greenhouse gas emission research, preferably in agricultural or rice-based systems.
- Hands-on experience with gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, or similar analytical techniques.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (R, Python, Excel) and statistical modeling.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of Indonesian (Bahasa) is a plus.
- Proven ability to train and mentor technical staff in laboratory procedures.
- Familiarity with international research protocols (e.g., IPCC guidelines, ISO standards).
- Willingness to travel to field sites across Indonesia as needed.
