Responsibility
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of the vesselâs main propulsion systems, auxiliary engines, and boiler systems in compliance with manufacturer specifications and SOLAS requirements.
- Conduct routine inspections of machinery, including pumps, compressors, and purification systems, to ensure optimal performance and prevent failures.
- Monitor and maintain fuel, lubrication, and cooling systems to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact (MARPOL compliance).
- Assist the Chief Engineer in planning and executing dry-dock repairs, including coordination with shore-based technical teams.
- Ensure safety protocols are followed during all engineering operations, including confined space entry, hot work, and emergency drills.
- Maintain accurate engine room logs, maintenance records, and inventory of spare parts and consumables.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly to minimize downtime and ensure vessel operational readiness.
- Supervise and mentor junior engineering crew (e.g., 3rd Engineers, Oiler, Fitter) in daily tasks and safety procedures.
Qualifications
- Valid 2nd Engineer License (STCW III/2) or 3rd Engineer License with 2nd Engineer endorsement (minimum requirement).
- Minimum 2 years of sailing experience on oil/chemical tankers or similar commercial vessels.
- Proficient in marine diesel engines (e.g., MAN, Wärtsilä), automation systems, and PLCs.
- Strong knowledge of MARPOL, SOLAS, and ISM Code regulations for tanker operations.
- Certifications in Advanced Firefighting, Medical First Aid, and Survival at Sea (STCW mandatory courses).
- Experience with planned maintenance systems (PMS) and condition-based monitoring tools.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure in dynamic environments.
- Fluency in English (written and verbal) for effective communication with multinational crews.
