The National University of Singapore (NUS) is seeking a dynamic and innovative Research Fellow to join our interdisciplinary team in Bali, Indonesia. This role focuses on advancing digital design, landscape architecture, and decision-support tools to address real-world challenges in urban planning, sustainability, and environmental design.

As part of this cutting-edge research initiative, you will collaborate with leading academics, industry experts, and policymakers to develop AI-driven design solutions, GIS-based landscape modeling, and interactive decision-support systems. Your work will contribute to shaping the future of smart cities, resilient landscapes, and data-informed policy frameworks in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Based in the vibrant and culturally rich environment of Canggu, Bali, this position offers a unique opportunity to merge academic rigor with practical, impactful research in one of the world’s most inspiring locations.

Responsibility

  • Lead and contribute to research projects in digital design, landscape architecture, and decision-support tools, with a focus on sustainability and urban resilience.
  • Develop and implement AI/ML models, GIS applications, and parametric design tools to optimize landscape and urban planning solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architects, engineers, data scientists, and policymakers, to integrate research findings into actionable strategies.
  • Publish high-impact research papers in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at international conferences.
  • Design and conduct field studies, data collection, and analysis to validate research hypotheses in real-world settings.
  • Mentor junior researchers and students, fostering a culture of innovation and knowledge sharing.
  • Develop prototypes and digital tools (e.g., interactive dashboards, simulation models) to support decision-making in landscape and urban design.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends in digital twin technology, IoT for smart landscapes, and climate-adaptive design.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Digital Design, Computer Science, or a related field with a focus on spatial analysis, computational design, or decision-support systems.
  • Proven experience (3+ years) in research, project management, or industry applications related to digital design tools (e.g., Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit, QGIS, ArcGIS).
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, or JavaScript for data analysis, visualization, and tool development.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch), parametric design, and BIM (Building Information Modeling).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with a track record of publishing in academic journals.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with stakeholders from academia, government, and industry.
  • Knowledge of sustainability principles, climate-resilient design, and smart city technologies is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and adapt to evolving research priorities.
