Are you passionate about pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence in audio and language processing? The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) is seeking a Lead Research Engineer to join our cutting-edge Aural & Language Intelligence team in Bali, Indonesia.
In this role, you will spearhead groundbreaking research in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and audio signal processing to develop next-generation AI solutions. Your work will shape how machines understand, interpret, and respond to human speech and environmental sounds, unlocking new possibilities in smart cities, healthcare, and human-computer interaction.

Responsibility
- Lead and mentor a team of researchers and engineers in developing advanced AI models for speech recognition, audio analysis, and language understanding.
- Design and implement deep learning architectures (e.g., Transformers, CNNs, RNNs) for real-time audio and language processing.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI solutions into commercial and research applications.
- Publish high-impact research in top-tier conferences and journals (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, Interspeech).
- Stay ahead of industry trends in AI, NLP, and audio signal processing and apply them to solve complex problems.
- Develop and optimize scalable, efficient algorithms for deployment in edge and cloud environments.
- Drive patent filings and intellectual property creation for novel AI technologies.
- Engage with stakeholders to define research roadmaps and align projects with business and societal needs.
Qualifications
- PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on AI, machine learning, or signal processing.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in research or industry, with a proven track record in audio AI, NLP, or speech technology.
- Strong programming skills in Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar frameworks.
- Experience with large-scale data processing, model training, and evaluation.
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals or conferences in relevant fields (a plus).
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and communicate complex ideas clearly.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and MLOps practices is advantageous.
