Responsibility
- Provide expert daily care, feeding, and husbandry for elephants, ensuring their optimal health and welfare.
- Implement and manage positive reinforcement training programs, focusing on elephant well-being, enrichment, and routine cooperative care.
- Regularly monitor elephant health, behavior, and social dynamics, reporting any concerns promptly to veterinary and management staff.
- Maintain the cleanliness and safety of elephant habitats and surrounding areas, adhering to strict animal welfare and hygiene protocols.
- Assist veterinary professionals with medical examinations, treatments, and procedures as required.
- Engage and educate visitors about elephant biology, conservation challenges, and the importance of ethical animal care through demonstrations and interactions.
- Ensure the safety of both elephants and visitors during all activities and public interactions.
- Participate in conservation initiatives and research projects related to elephant welfare and population management.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3-5 years of proven professional experience as an Elephant Mahout or an equivalent role in large animal care and training within a reputable zoo, wildlife park, or conservation center.
- Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of elephant behavior, natural history, and advanced husbandry practices.
- A strong commitment to modern, ethical animal welfare standards and positive reinforcement training methodologies.
- Excellent observation skills and the ability to detect subtle changes in animal health or behavior.
- Physical stamina and the ability to perform demanding duties in various weather conditions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging effectively with colleagues, management, and the public.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- A valid driver's license may be required.
